The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) aimed to achieve both favourable working conditions for seafarers and secure economic interests in fair competition for quality shipowners – known as the “fourth pillar” of the international regulatory regime for quality shipping, complementing the key Conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Malta ratified the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) on 18 January 2013. The Convention entered into force for Malta on 20 August 2013. The MLC has been transposed into domestic legislation through the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour Convention) Rules, 2013. A copy of the Rules may be downloaded from here.

Rule 51 of this legislation refers to Minimum Wage and the new Notices from Transport Malta now stipulates the minimum basic wage per calendar month of service for an able seafarer.
