The history of Malta is intimately tied up with the history of Valletta Grand Harbour. It was the Harbour’s natural magnificence, which persuaded the Knights of St John to come here in 1530, and to make the Island a vital defence post in the struggle raging at the time between Cross and Crescent.
Valletta: a city ‘’Built by Gentlemen for Gentlemen’’
The Harbour wears a line of fortifications like a girdle. These massive constructions were built by the Knights of St. John and rank as one of the most enduring monuments to their rule. It has witnessed some of the finest episodes of the Island’s history, from the invasion by the Ottomans in 1565, to Malta’s capture by Napoleon in 1798 and its liberation by the British in 1800. After that, it was inevitable that Malta’s strategic placement in the Mediterranean made the Harbour home and base to what was the most powerful navy in the world.
Be on deck when your liner noses its way into the Grand Harbour and a sight awaits you of such grandeur, its impression will never leave you.
